Does Curcumin And Ginger Powder Cause High ALK In The Liver?

My blood test results showed a high ALK In my liver. I do not have hepatitis & I have never consumed alcohol (1 drink my entire life). I am a 5 6 , 200#, 62 yr old female, challenged with Type 1 Diabetes, who recently lost my job due to a surprise company closing. I recently started taking a 500 mg of Tumeric Curcumin with 50 mg of Ginger Powder, because I have joint pain in my knee. Will this hurt my liver?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Curcumin and ginger powder do not cause elevated ALK. It might be due to some other causes and has to be evaluated if persistently high. High ALK levels are seen in hepatitis, gall stones, alcoholic liver diseases and bone related conditions like arthritis and Paget’s disease can also cause high ALK. Sometimes without any significant disease ALK is elevated as in some infections and fever and it will return to normal in week or two. You can do a repeat ALK after ten days and if it’s still high, do an ultrasound abdomen to look for any biliary cause. It will be better to consult a gastroenterologist for persistently high ALK values.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
