Does Desipramine Cause Elevated Heart Rate?

My husband started taking desipramine 10 mg three times a day, 6 days ago. treating diabetic neuropathy pain in his feet, it replaced Cymbalta 60 mg that he had been taking for 3 weeks and before that he had been taking Zoloft for about 18 years. He also is a heart patient with severly reduced ejection fraction of 21 %. AFTER STARTING THE DESIPRAMINE, He first started having increased heart rate raising from his usual between 75 and 85 to 99 to 120, and now he is complaining of a strange medicine like, vapor like smell. And is weak feeling.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Desipramine may cause elevated heart rates. But it won’t cause much problems. Other symptoms you have mentioned cannot be attributed to Desipramine. You can consult a physician in case of persistent symptoms.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks.
