Does Duphaston Intake During Pregnancy Cause A Miscarriage?

Good day dr. My sister didn t know she was pregnant and she took dephaston. Just only earlier, she discovered she had a miscarriage. She and her husband are very devastated because she thought it was just another normal thing for her not to have her period in a while. My question is, what is the biochemistry or physiology basis of this medicine to be able to cause miscarriage. I am a first year med student and I am very curious. Please and thank you

Hello,

The name of the medicine is a hormone called dydrogesterone (progesterone).

This product is indicated in women trying to conceive if there is proven, documented deficiency of the progesterone hormone (during luteal phase).

Once conception has taken place, progesterone hormone is indicated only in pregnancies due to assisted reproductive techniques such as IVF etc.

In the case of progesterone deficiency in the first trimester, you may have to take a low dose of progesterone. Why because from second trimester onwards progesterone secreted by the placenta.

Overuse of this hormone may lead to abortions in a few patients. So don't worry please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
