Does Eldoper For Diarrhea Cause Long Term Side Effects?

Just a day ago when I visited a Consulting Physician to some premium hospitals, I was very categorically told that 'Eldoper' is a banned drug world around though an OTC in India and is not a recommended drug for diarrhea as the long term side effects can be serious. This has got me concerned as 'Eldoper' forms part of our medical kit when we travel.
