Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Forteo Prescribed For Osteoporosis Cause Osteosarcoma?
I have a family history of cancer: Mother - melanoma and breast cancer, brother died at age 22 with testicular cancer, sister died at age 65 with breast cancer, niece died at age 45 with breast cancer, aunt died at age 82 with breast cancer, and currently two first cousins are fighting breast cancer and one first cousin has bladder cancer. I have been prescribed Forteo for osteoporosis and the literature with the medicine has a warning that it may cause osteosarcoma because it appeared in rats during testing. I feel that I am taking a great risk to use the Forteo. What is your opinion?
I don't think there is much evidence that Forteo causes osteosarcoma. All the cancers you mentioned gave different risk factors and are not related to each other.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Olgeta Xhufka , General & Family Physician
