Does Indapamide Cause Any Serious Blood Abnormality?

I was prescribed indapamide but blood tests which were taken by chance, due to me being admitted to hospital, reviled a blood abnormality which I understand to be a side effect of indapamide. (My hospital admission was the result of an epileptic fit caused by failure to comply with my medication ) I assume there would have been no blood test without the hospital admission. Have I been incredibly lucky to have the abnormality detected and what is the likelihood of the abnormally and what would the consequences have been if the problem had not been detected?

Hi,

Yes, although it is very rare, thrombocytopenia can occur. Indapamide is a thiazide diuretic ('water pill') commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure and edema associated with congestive heart failure. Its common side effects include dyspepsia, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, hypokalemia, hyponatremia, hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia and allergic reactions.

Thrombocytopenia (decreased platelet count) is a very rare but serious blood abnormality that can occur with Indapamide. Its consequences include bleeding from the nose or in the skin or in other organs. Bleeding is reversible and the platelet count would return to normal level following discontinuation of Indapamide.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
