Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son has been taking Keppra for seizures since he was 5 years old. He is now 12 and is having great difficulty with inattentiveness, forgetfulness, and is very emotional. I realize some of this is normal for his age. I work with this age group. However, he is struggling in comparison to peers and never has before. Is this a possible side effect of the medication?
Seizures although well controlled with Keppra, sometimes can cause alteration or damage often the brain. This is clinically expressed with the symptoms your son is currently having (inattentiveness, forgetfulness and very emotional changes).
Please talk to his psychiatrist about these new symptoms in order to take proper treatment. Psychological support and therapy is very important too.
All the best.
