Does Levothyroxine Cause Pimples On The Face?

I am on levothyroxin my dr. said my thyroid was not working, I wen to him because my hair was falling out and I had a bald spot..He put me on 25mgs then 50mgs now I am on 75mgs and my nose has broken out with pimples and my cheeks are red. When I went back to the dr with this mess, he said I have rosasca (sp). I ask him if this medicine had caused this and he said no. But I beg to differ, please help me, I work and can t look like this. my eamil is YYYY@YYYY Thanks

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your query you have symptoms of pimples on face while on Levothyroxine which is due to excessive dose of this medication as it can lead to hormonal imbalance. Need not to worry. Visit your general physician once and get complete blood and thyroid tests done and get your medication dose lowered. I would suggest you to give cold compresses to pimples several times a day to prevent from swelling and itching and take over the counter antihistamine drug like Benadryl. Apply tea tree oil to skin. If symptoms still persist the consult dermatologist for proper examination and treatment. Doctor may perform skin test and may prescribe other steroid cream, anti inflammatory drug or drugs that can suppress immune system.
