Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m a 63 year old man, in generally good health, 5 9 , 195 pounds. I am a muscular, athletic build. Three years ago, I had cardiac catheterization done for a blockage. At the time, I weighed 185 pounds. Question...can it be that Lisinopril is in some way responsible for the weight gain? Can it be that, plus other medications causing this unwanted gain? It is mostly belly fat. I hit the gym three times a week for Medex work, plus I walk four miles a day year round.
Ten pounds is not a large amount of weight gain per se. Finding where the weight is going is the first question. If there is gain of mostly muscle then there really isn't a problem. if there is gain in fluid that is quite a concern. Lisinopril lowers the blood pressure going through the kidneys and causes a lowering of work by the kidneys.
Mostly this is good, but it can cause less fluid to go out and fluid accumulation in quite a small number of people. This would be likely visible if it is 10 pounds of fluid and would also show in any evaluation of kidney function. Changes in eating/fat/appetite/thyroid/energy use are not at all likely with lisinopril.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Matt Wachsman
