Does Losartan Damage Kidneys?

OK. My bp used to be around 140. Since December it has jumped up to around 170. I can t explain it. I have been on losartan for a couple years. Plus station plus blood thinner. Could losartan have damaged my kidneys? I had a cold in December, and still have slight cough.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It works by blocking a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten. As a result, losartan relaxes the blood vessels.

A lower blood pressure will increase the supply of the blood and oxygen to the heart.

Losartan is also used to decrease the risk of stroke in patients with high blood pressure and enlargement of the heart.

It is also used to treat kidney problems in patients with type 2 diabetes and a history of hypertension.

So Losartan will not damage your kidneys and if your blood pressure is high then it is possible that another antihypertensive may have to be added. Please talk to your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
