I can understand your concern for the safety of various BP lowering medications and sorry to know that some of them have caused undesirable side effects.
Its most common side effects include headache, flushing, constipation, swollen feet and ankles, increased heart beats, palpitations, lightheadedness, etc.
Since it is known to cause increased heart beats I would not advise you to take this medication as this may have an adverse impact on your heart in this age.
Kindly consult a physician or cardiologist for proper assessment and for certain safer but effective BP lowering medications such as Methyldopa which may have less adverse effects.
Hope this answers your query.
