Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I just received the results of a urine culture don on 11/17/16 at my ob/gyn office. I had classic uti symptoms with bloody urine. The culture came back with the causative org being Klebsiella pneumoniae. At the time of culture I was started on the generic Nitrofurantoin 100 mg q 12 hours. Will this treat my uti or do I need another antibiotic? Thank you.
Nitrofurantoin is most effective in persons with UTI. Due to indiscriminate use of antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, amoxycillin, cephalosporins, etc most of the antibiotics became resistant towards the UTI causing bacteria.
Nitrofurantoin has not been used indiscriminately so it is effective in most of the cases. But anyway you should ask your doctor to get a drug sensitivity test done which will clearly tell you whether nitrofurantoin will be effective or not.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
