Hi I just received a note from my doctor that my Alt is 35 and my Ast is 41 which she states is up from 2015 and she wants me to come in for a work up. I work out , have 4 drinks total on the weekend and have been taking prescription omperzole for years? could have something to do with it? Should I be concerned?

Hello,

Omeprazole is generally considered a safe drug and many patients take it for long times. Rarely though it may cause increase in liver function tests which is generally mild and transitory (goes away when stopping omeprazole). So even if the increase is due to omeprazole it is not dangerous as it fades when omperazole is stopped.

On the other hand the increase you are having is not significant, generally we worry if the liver enzymes increase 3 fold from the normal level (when they are around 100) so i would say it is not dangerous the level you are having. The doctor might also need to consider other possible causes of increase of liver enzymes as omeprazole is not the most common cause, so he might do a thorough examination on you and might request other tests.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
