Does Prozac Interact With Nortriptyline?

Why would my doctor recommend taking nortriptyline for severe joint pain in my hands when I m on Prozac and everything I ve read says you definitely should not take these two drugs together. He knows all the other drugs that I m already on including pain killers(morphine and Norco)?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, Nortriptyline may cause harmful interactions if taken along with Prozac. Nortriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant used to treat depression, painful neuropathy and other conditions.

Prozac (Fluoxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used to treat major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorders. When taken together, this combination may cause sedation (drowsiness), dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and urinary retention. Nortriptyline may also increase the blood levels of Prozac which may result in its increased side effects like altered consciousness, confusion, poor muscle coordination, abdominal cramping, shivering, dilation of the pupils, sweating, high blood pressure, and increased heart beats.

Kindly consult your treating doctor for an alternative effective but a safer medications for your severe joint pains.

Hope these answer your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further. A feed back is appreciated.
