Does Synthroid Cause Excessive Hair Loss?

I was changed by my m.d. from Armour thyroid to synthroid, possibly because my insurance carrier no longer carried the Armour. I had an ablation about 10-12 years ago, but continue taking thyroid for hyperthyroidism. I am now losing a lot of hair and wonder if this is the cause.

Hello,

Abnormal levels of thyroid, particularly hypothyroidism, can cause hair loss. Your hormone levels can be checked.

There are also other causes of hair loss that may need to be ruled out:

1. Anemia
2. Emotional stress
3. Physical stress or illness
4. Excess vitamin A levels
5. Lack of protein
6. Hereditary
7. Male pattern baldness

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
