Does A Fleshy Colored Gum Lump With No Pain Need Dental Treatment?

I just noticed a fleshy, flesh colored lump on my son s upper gum. He said that it doesn t hurt and said that it s been there awhile . It doesn t feel like there s a tooth coming in behind it ... Should I be worried or just get him into the dentist as soon as I m able?
