Does A Gum Infection Cause Low Pulse Rate?

My doctor referred me to a cardiologist that I will visit the end of March because my pulse has gotten low, 51. Today my periodontist says I have a gum infection and has prescribed penicillin which I will get today. Just wondering, is it possible the infection caused my pulse to drop for the past month?

Hello,

Gum infection is rarely seen to cause any disturbances in heart function, although there is a condition that can be caused by teeth and gum infection that is bacterial endocarditis, it is very rare. So I do not think that you fall in pulse rate is due to your gum infection, so you should get a cardiac investigation done to rule out the cause of low pulse rate.

As far as your gum infection concerned, you should get deep scaling done followed by a course of antibiotics to resolve the infection faster. Massage the gums with Chlorohexidine gel to reduce infection. You should also gargle with warm saline solution and antiseptic mouthwash solution.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
