Does A Painful Extra Rib Require Immediate Medical Attention?

Hi im a 28yr old female in 2007 a Dr. discovered I have a extra rib and suggested surgery,but I didn't want to deal with the recovery and after affects. So after a while it stop causing pain until two days ago is that a bad sign and can it be life threaten?
