Does A Slip Disc Requires Surgery?

hi am now 40. i sustained light injury to my back when i was 25. at the age of 36 i had my 1st baby and i suffered which the doctor called disc prolapse. in between 25 to 35 yrs of age i sufferred from stiff neck 2 to 3 times a year. after the prolapse ive been in constant pain and mri result show slip disc between 5th and 6th backbone. doc says no surgery needed. ur opinion?
