After getting stung by a stingray, is it normal for the arm to remain swelled up and turn purple, it also has blisters breaking out, it s been 3 days since he got stung, went to ER the day it happened, just gave him pain meds and told to use heat...We have been doing both also used antiinflammatory meds, had an xray taken and no barb left in arm.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, the swelling and purple discoloration in the arm is related to cellulitis development after stinging at the arm site.

* In addition to ice and anti-inflammatory medications, you require prescription of antibiotics to resolve the edema faster with prevention of secondary infection or abscess formation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
