Does Acupuncture Help In Treating Hyperthyroidism?

I have been on 10 mg of methimazole twice a day since may my TSH is still low , less than 0.032. I take propanalol as needed to control shakes and heartbeat (20mg). Concern about heart rate blood pressure and cholesterol levels as they are all high. How soon should I anticipate improvement. Finally are your opinions about acupuncture to treat hyperthyroidism?

Hello,
I read your concerns and feel sorry to learn about your bothersome symptoms.
The treatment with methimazol usually is recommended for 18 months.
To control the effect of the dose usually during the first months we monitor it by checking the FT4 and FT3 level rather than TSH.
So i would advice to talk with your treating physician to confirm that the actual dose is not enough and see the possibility to raise the dose. If the dose is correct it takes 4 weeks to improve the symptoms.
Regarding to acupunture there are no scientific publications that approve its effect and a result recommend it.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
