Does Alcohol Consumption Affect The Potency Of Synthroid?

My wife had her thyroid removed a year ago and before the surgery had a fantastic memory but now, she cannot remember what she did yesterday. She drinks about 10 drinks (vodka, kalua, etc.) every weekend to the point of passing out each time. She is on Synthroid and I was wondering if the alcohol could be adversely affecting her?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Of course excessive alcohol consumption can affect the brain and especially the memory. Also, having low thyroid and not well balanced can cause loss of memories and brain functions. She may need to stop drinking excessive amount of alcohol and may need to take thyroid replacement therapy.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
