Does Alcohol Consumption Cause Swelling In The Ankles And Legs?

My ankles and legs are swollen, mostly my ankles. Putting cold compresses and keeping them up haven t made a difference. I walk 30 minutes every morning. Can drinking too much alcohol cause this? Also, I m okay with my morning walk. But I when I walk after that from the parking structure to the hospital (about a block walk) I m out of breath, the same happens after work when I walk my dog for 10-15 minutes.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The swelling of the legs can be caused by many medical conditions.

One of them is alcohol consumption.

Other possible causes can be heart issues or peripheral vascular issues.

I suggest seeing a cardiologist to exclude cardiac issues.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
