Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I went to the Dr's. office about 3 weeks ago for a check up and they told me my blood pressure was 130 over 100. The nurse said "it was slightly elevated". Now, here's my question....If my blood pressure is only slightly elevated and it has NEVER been before in my life(I'm 33) why now, 3 weeks later if I drink A beer does my face and neck get all flushed and hot ? Could it be that the alcohol in the beer is causing this abnormal reaction ? Trust me when I say this. I DO NOT drink heavy at all. I'll go through a 6 pack on the week ends at most. Also, I have been fine for the last 3 weeks, this flushed feeling I am getting has just started last night. What gives ?
I should add. The Doc gave me two scripts. One was Erythromycin for adult acne.(something I have fought all my life). Also for Amitriptylin(25mg) to help me sleep. I work 3rd shift and I have a horrible time trying to sleep. I called a pharmacist and spoke with him about this, and he said that typically a few beers with the scripts I'm taking wouldn't hurt a thing.
If I remember correctly, flushing may be caused by a deficiency in folic acid. Alcohol consumption requires you to increase your folic acid intake because alcohol interferes with the absorption of folic acid. Folic acid is naturally found in green leafy vegetables, lentils, and orange juice amongst others and cream of wheat hot cereal is usually fortified with it.
And by the way, something insignificant can cause a slight elevation in blood pressure from the position of the arm or body, to anxiety, to something you ate earlier that day.
