Does Birth Control Affect Periods?

My name is Kelly and I have had very irregular periods, I go months at a time without having a period. I was using Tri-Sprintec for about 3 years and it regulated my periods. But about 5 months ago I quit taking my birth control and I haven't had a period yet. Is there anything I can do or should I schedule a drs appointment?
Also how long after using birth control does it take to have your normal period again?

Hello,

Yes, birth control medicines do affect the periods. Vaginal bleeding between periods (spotting) or missed / irregular periods may occur, especially during the first few months of use. Once the body adjusts with the hormonal changes, problems subside. However, if you miss 2 periods in a row (or 1 period if the pill has not been used properly), do a pregnancy test. Since you are not having periods, get tested & confirmed that you are not pregnant.

If you are not pregnant you have secondary ammenorrhea caused commonly due to stress, anemia, underweight, thyroid problems, polycystic ovary syndrome, anorexia nervosa, etc. You are suggested to take iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc rich food and supplements. Take home made balanced food, vegges, nuts, fruits and berries. Stay away from stress & addictions if any. Get examined by a gynecologist and get blood tests, urinalysis and USG, CT done to detect the cause, get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
