Does Bruise On Back Of Upper Thigh From A Fall Need Medical Attention?

My son fell down his stairs (he is 22) and he landed on his but and skidded all the way down....now he has a huge bruise on the back of his upper thigh and it is swollen and in the center of it it is bright red and the surrounding area is dark red and purple...should he see his dr?
