Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 6 year old gets a fever and acts sick after she s stung from a bumble bee. This makes the second time so far this year, one time last week and now this week as well. She was given amoxicillin to take 3x a day for 10 days which she s currently taken due to an infection from the first sting. However, my question and concern is, why does she develop a fever and act sick the same day she gets stung? Her temp is 100.7 and she was stung approximately 8 hours ago.
A bee sting activates the immune system and in some patients, this stimulation of the immune system may cause release of substances that increase the temperature. So, even though it is not very common, it may happen that patients may develop a fever during an allergic reaction.
If the fever develops after a day or two from the bee sting then it is very likely due to a complication with infection at the bite site and antibiotics are needed, as it has happened the first time with your child.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
