Does Celiac Disease Lead To Diabetes Type 1?

Hello I have a 10yr old daughter who is celiac and Im concerned she may be headed toward having type 1 diabetes. For the past 10 days we have checked her glucose levels each morning they have been 103 or higher each day with 126 being her highest morning. We tested a few nights couple hours after dinner with readings being 111, 142, 131, 124, 161 but also there were two readings at 82 & 88. Do these numbers warrant concern to have her checked out. She was tested back in December after experiencing a terrible flu but after two fasting glucose test one at 129 and the other at 101 they said she was fine. I m still not convince she is. Am I over reacting or do you think these numbers are ok. I know there is a link with celiac disease and type 1 and I want to be on the look out to make sure she is healthy and right now she seems like she needs to eat all the time and doesn t get filled up. Some nights she wakes up so hungry she is almost delirious acting. Thank you!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history related to your 10 year old daughter having celiac disease and you are worried about type I diabetes, undergone blood sugar tests.
Yes, there is a relation between the two. If one is suffering from one disease then there is always a chance of development of another disease under discussion.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
First of all consult your Doctor for counselling and get a reference for a Diabetologist and Gastroenterologist for proper evaluation, examination and investigations including that of HbA1c, Radiology for pancreas, blood Insulin and so on.
Now a days we get a continuous blood sugar monitoring devise that gives better result to decide whether the patient has diabetes or not.
Type I diabetes needs Insulin hence the need to have in depth studies to decide,
Dietary changes may help to alleviate the sudden hunger. Consult a Dietitian for this.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
