Does Cramping And Diarrhea After Taking Z Pack During Pregnancy Mean Recurred C Dif?

I am 34 years old and 24 weeks pregnant. I was prescribed a z pack for sinusitis and have had 3 doses so far. This evening I started having some pretty bad cramping then emptied my bowels. Not long after more cramping then diarrhea. Then I went for another round all in a matter of about 3 hours.

Two years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter I had colostrum difficile twice and then once post partum. But the culprit was amoxicillin.

Could this be c-dif again? Guessing I should see how this plays out before I call my doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Thank you for your question. This is likely a side effect of the z-pak, common side effects include: nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. I would recommend adding a probiotic once daily, this recolonizes your intestines with "good bacteria" that are also killed off by the antibiotic. Warning signs of c-diff include watery-mucousy diarrhea, very foul odor, and sometimes fever. I would not expect this to start after 3 doses, but if you are concerned or symptoms continue to get worse I would advise you to follow up with your doctor for testing.
