Hi,
Nexplanon implant contains etonogestrel, a female natural sex hormone called
progesterone that is used in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourses for up to 3 years. But, once removed, etonogestrel levels in the blood fall to undetectable in weeks, so some side effects like headache, mood swings, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea or
constipation,
vaginal discharge, vaginal bleeding,
pelvic cramps, menstrual pattern changes etc., may occur during this period of time and these side effects will improve within a few days to weeks after removal of Nexplanon implant. But if side effects bother you, you should consult your doctor first. Again, if you have any doubt of getting pregnant, then you can do urine test for
pregnancy 7 days after the next missed period.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
