Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Dehydration Cause Elevated Liver Enzyme Level?
I have had blood tests 2x in the last 2 months. My liver enzymes were at 48, 2 months ago and last result came down to 43. I was put atorvastatin roughly 9 months ago. Never had elevations prior. I do not drink alcohol more than 2x per month. I have been exercising since February and started chewing tobacco 3 months ago after I quit smoking. Is it possible dehydration is causing the elevated levels?
- Statins like atorvastatin can occasionally cause an elevation in your liver panel. However, If you are referring to AST or ALT being 48 or 43, that elevation is not too significant - I would not worry about it at this point; dehydration generally doesn't affect liver panels. It could change kidney function levels.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan, General & Family Physician
