Does Drinking Cold Water Cause Throat Infection?

I have been currently living in the South Asia country, but I was brought up in an east asia. Everybody here says that drinking cold water causes us tonsils and cold, but I think it is a wrong idea. In Japan, everybody drinks cold water; ENT doctors or any other doctors just advise us not to take too much cold things like ice-cream or any sweet snacks. Is drinking cold water actually bad for our health as the people say?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

No,drinking cold water does not cause a throat infection.

If your sore throat is accompanied by a fever, you may become dehydrated so you need to replenish lost fluids.

Cold ice water can help soothe the throat,so it is recommended in this case.

Hope my answer was helpful.

If you have further queries feel free to contact me again.

Kind regards!
