Does Eating Raw Rice Cause Anemia?

Hi, i had anemia 8 years ago. Recently I checked my hemoglobin and it is down to 7.2 maybe because i stopped drinking iron tablets. Is eating raw rice affecting it in any way? I have been doing this for years now. Iam still waiting for the result of my iron studies

Hi there

Eating raw rice does not cause an anaemia but it is suggestive of you having an iron deficiency. A symptom of iron deficiency is pica which is the ingestion of non nutritive substances like ice, raw rice, craving for metal.. Although Pica can be cause by different diagnoses, in your case this is most likely do to the mineral deficiency i.e. iron deficiency.

Increase your intake of dark green leafy vegetable, legumes such as beans and peas, vitamin C, red meat as well as fish. If you drink a lot of tea, do avoid this while taking iron supplements.

Although anaemia can be caused by a number of reasons, iron deficiency is the most common cause. Iron deficiency occurs if
you are either not ingesting enough iron rich foods, or you are not absorbing the iron ( too much tea, or taking iron supplements with other medications, or if you have hookworms)
or you are losing iron ( from heavy menstruation or from the digestive system)

Hope this helps.
