Does Eating Slate Pencils Affect Fetus?

hello Dr. goodmorning. I am almost 7 months pregnanat,and i have crazy craving of eating slate pencils.I want to stop it.but i have no control on my craving. i am also worried how it will effect my baby.and i have another doubt that this habit will effect on the baby s colour?I want to stop it but dont know how to get rid of it.Can please let me know if it has any bad effects on my baby s health and colour.?

The problem that you are describing is called 'Pica' and it is not terribly uncommon during pregnancy. It is an abnormal craving that is likely related to a mineral deficiency. The most likely cause is related to iron deficiency. This is unlikely to harm your baby, but you NEED to talk to your OB/GYN about this as they may want to check labs and prescribe supplemental iron.
