Does Excessive Fat In Liver Interrupt The Fibro Scan Results?
I am a 54 yr old male with a history of heart disease. I ve had two heart by pass surgeries & several stents. My liver enzyme levels started to rise a couple years ago & my primary doctor decided I should see a liver specialist. After checking my blood, my AST & ALT were very high. I thought it was coming from the statins I was on for high cholesterol. The blood test ruled out any type of Hepatitis. My PA decided (I haven t seen a doctor yet) to do a fibroscan & then told me I had cirrhosis. I am overweight. 5 9 240. Have had my blood rechecked & now my AST is 94 & ALT 99. So they have come down but still elevated. I did drink alcohol daily but have stopped since being diagnosed with cirrhosis. I feel good & now down to 220 & work out 4 days a week with weights & also get cardio on treadmill & exercise bike. I recently found out that I had type 2 diabetes. I have read on line that obese people can have abnormal fibroscan results. Now that I m losing weight, eating a healthy diet, not drinking any more, is it possible the fibroscan is inaccurate since I had a lot of fat? My name is Mark. My email address is YYYY@YYYY

Does Excessive Fat In Liver Interrupt The Fibro Scan Results?
Hello, Fibroscan is done to detect fibrosis in liver. Fibrosis is later stage of fatty liver. Thus, fibrosis can not be masked by fatty liver. Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
