Does Exposure To OC Foam Cause Recurring Migraines?

2 years ago i was voluntarily sprayed with OC foam (pepper spray). Prior to this, i had never had a migraine. The day after i sprayed i experienced my first migraine and have continuing experiencing on a semi-regular basis. Is it possible that the OC foam caused this to happen?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Exposure to OC foam is unlikely to cause recurrent migraines. Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) is a pepper spray made from capsaicin is an inflammatory agent.

It can irritate the inner linings in the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs causing a burning sensation in the eyes, running nose, coughing and difficulty breathing which usually subside after few hours.

Its exposure is not associated with recurrent migraines. The exact cause of migraines is not known.

However, the most common migraine triggers include a lack of sleep, skipping a meal, caffeine or alcohol, and being under stress, sensory stimulation like unusually bright lights, loud noises, or strong smells, hormonal changes or while on birth control pills may also cause recurring migraines.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
