Does Exposure To Mold Or Mildew Cause Severe Wheezing?

I teach school and drive a school bus. Over the Thanksgiving break my bus was vandalized so I had to get a sub bus. The bus had black stuff (which I thought was dirt / dust) EVERY WHERE. I spent 3 hours cleaning the inside of this bus with 409 the Saturday before we went back to school on Monday. After I cleaned it, I closed all the windows and doors. It was cold outside Monday so the windows stayed up and the heat was on. I sneezed and sneezed all the way to school. Shortly after arriving at school i started wheezing. By the end of the day Tuesday, I was having major difficulties breathing. Wednesday morning I couldn t stop sneezing while on the bus and by noon, I was in an ambulance on the way to the hospital and was admitted but released the next day. I told my school district that the black stuff all over the inside of that bus had to be mold. They told me no, they thought it was just mildew. Is there a difference between mold and mildew and could this have caused my sneezing and severe breathing problems?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You may be allergic to mold and mildew and try to avoid it as much as possible. An antihistaminic like cetrizine or levocetrizine or neoloratidine may help relieve the symptoms but they'll keep recurring whenever you come in the close environment as the mold.

Also, keeping the windows open and air conditioner off may help as more fresh air would circulate in the vehicle. If the wheezing and breathlessness is persistent, keep a salbutamol or aerocort inhaler with you at all times, in cases of emergencies.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shalki Mattas
