Does Hernia Operation Causes Stomach Cramp?

My 47 year old husband had hernia surgery on May 12th - a few days after his surgery he could only eat small portions of food and then his stomach would start cramping and it is still cramping - is this normal after hernia surgery - the surgery was near his belly-button.
