Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does High Consumption Of Sugar Affect Cognitive Skills Like Observational Skills, Memory And Level Of Irritability?
My 53 year old husband is a sugar addict. On Sundays he consumes a cookie from Panera/St Louis Bread company, Coke at dinner and 2 scoops of ice cream. He drinks Coke nearly every day and will eat pastry goods for breakfast during the week. He also consumes the same Panera cookies at least 3 other times during the week. My question is, does a high consumption of sugar on a daily basis affect cognitive skills; i.e. attention, observational skills, memory , level of irritability., etc? Amy
Unfortunately we live in a society that has too many sugars in our diet. And sugar is an addictive substance. The more we eat of it, the more we crave it. And it also adds to our obesity, heart problems, diabetes etc.
It will also effect our mood and cognition, making one more irritable.
Maybe it's time to help him alter eating habits. Have a small chat with him. But it will not be an easy change and requires a gradual change, rather than sudden changes at once!
Hope this helps!
