Does High Levels Of A1c Require Medication?

Do you believe that an A1c of 6.76 should be treated with oral medication? Would this help with weight loss and/or increasing insulin sensitivity? I am about 40-50 lb overweight and having very little luck losing. I am experiencing higher than expected morning glucose readings also & am trying to reduce carbs in my diet as well as increasing exercise.

Hello,

This is a problem I encounter quite often in my practice.
Since the HbA1c(A1c) is more than 6.5 and you have high fasting blood sugar, you have diabetes. There is no need to be worried or depressed but it calls for more effort on your part to reduce the weight and to exercise. These would decrease the Insulin Resistance (IR) which is the cause of your diabetes ( Type2). Regarding the food, it is important that you avoid all simple sugars and reduce foods made of rice, wheat , potato and sweets which are high glycemic ( raises blood sugar fast). Instead you should take more pulses, vegetables, fish, chicken etc which do not raise the blood sugar as much (low glycemic)
There is a medication called Metformin which is helpful in decreasing your IR and also it would be helpful in reducing your high morning blood sugar as it decreases the sugar released from the liver.
You could try the diet using the guidelines I suggested and daily exercise of moderate intensity for 30minutes and if it is not successful meet a GP or internist in your area and request a prescription for metformin which would help you. Bye the way metformin is used in other conditions where there is IR with normal blood sugar . There is also a study in which people with diabetes treated with metformin lived longer than people without diabetes. So there is no need to worry if you have to take metformin.
Hope I have answered your query and if you have any concerns, you are welcome get back to me.
Wish you good health
