Does Hormonal Imbalance Cause Elevated Blood Pressure Levels?
Hello Doctor, I wanted to ask why my blood pressure is higher when I lay down flat and also when I wake up first thing in the morning (Some say it is because cortisol levels are higher in the morning), but why does my bp go up when I lie down and I also feel like a pressure headache. I am a 52 year old female. I have gallstones and was due for a cholestecomy but they couldn t do it because my blood pressure shot up when i got to the hospital. My blood pressure also varies according to my periods. I am perimenopausal now. I first noticed the rise in blood pressure after my 3rd child. It was like a premenstrual water retention kind of thing. And after my period my bp would come down. Now of course my periods are scantier and further apart, but I get the breast tenderness and elevated blood pressure. I wanted to know if hormonal imbalances can give rise to the blood pressure or is it something else I am suffering from.
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Some diurnal variation in blood pressure is normal. As you know early morning BP will be bit more than later part of time because of high levels of cortisol in the body. I suggest you to get your blood pressure checked regularly by your doctor. I'm not sure how much exactly is your blood pressure and whether you are on anti-hypertensive medications. Whatever it is, if you are prescribed medications by your doctor then take it regularly without fail as prescribed by your doctor. Hormonal imbalances can definitely cause raise in blood pressure. Hyper-thyroidism, cushing's disease (increased corticosteroids in the body) or even increase in estrogen in the body can cause raise in blood pressure. Kidney disease, liver disease etc can also cause raise in BP. So if your BP is not controlled even after taking medications the doctor may do some blood tests and scan to find out the cause.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
