Does Imbalance In Thyroid Levels Cause Delay In Periods?

Hello,My name is Cynthia, I am 18 years old, I have not had my period in over 5 months. I am not sexually active, so I know for sure I am not pregnant. I have however recently found out my hormones and thyroid were unbalanced, but I have been on a medicine to balance them back out, but I still have not had my period. I am really concerned that there could be something wrong. Please help.

Hi,

Hypothyroidism can definitely cause irregular or delayed periods. In case of confirmed diagnosis, thyroxine is started. The name of the medication you have been taking has not been mentioned. In case Thyroxine has been started, continue the tablet and check thyroid levels TSH, free T3, T4 after 15 to 20 days. When the levels return normal, your cycles will slowly regularise. Do not worry.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General and Family Physician
