Does Increased Dosage Of Synthroid Cause Weight Gain?

I have increased my dose of Synthroid from 0.5 mcg to 0.75 mcg but my TSH seems to stay low. Just day before yesterday it was still 0.29. I am trying to lose weight but it is not coming off very fast either. Should I be doing anything different with my Synthroid dose, like take it at a different time of day?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The prescribed dose of Synthyroid depends upon the age, weight, medical condition, laboratory tests results & response of the patient to the treatment being given.

Avoid changing the doses by your self. Thyroid replacement medication is usually taken for life, never stop this medication without consulting your doctor.

An underactive thyroid causes weight gain, get properly treated. Overactive thyroid caused weight loss.

Overdose of the medication may cause arrhythmia, dizziness, loss of consciousness, confusion & seizures.

Synthroid is used to treat thyroid disorders NOT obesity(weight gain).

Weight gain may occur due to age, diabetes, PCOS, fluid retention, tiredness, stress & low mood, steroid treatment, etc.

You need a thorough medical health check up. Get treated at the earliest to get rid of unnecessary weight gain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
