Does Intake Of Gabapentin Help In Reducing Alcohol Cravings?

My husband has just entered alcoholic treatment rehab, voluntarily. Along with Ativan, he was placed on Gabapentin. He asked why, and was told for seizure control. He doesn t have seizures, although I realize it s possible with withdrawal from alcohol. He also asked if it would reduce cravings for alcohol. He was told that it would. He wanted me to find out if that was true.

Hi,

If you are dependent on alcohol, you may experience any of these common and less severe withdrawal symptoms as early as 6 hours after your last intake of alcohol6:

-insomnia-anxiety, insomnia, anxiety, headache, gastrointestinal disturbances, palpitations (rapid, irregular heartbeats) and sweating.

Theoretically, gabapentin’s ability to increase GABA production may be responsible for producing a calming effect on a number of these alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

Research studies have added further insights as to how gabapentin succeeds in relieving a number of these symptoms.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
