Does Intake Of Gleevec Trigger The RBC And Hemoglobin Levels?
I am taking GLEEVEC and my red cell count is 3.1 and my hemoglobin is 10.5. my MCV is high (34.3).My B12 level is fine, but I had a partial gastrectomy(SP) and I m wondering if I m just not absorbing the B12 correctly, or if there is anything I can do to help my red cell levels since the GLEEVEC impairs cell growth??
The mild change in hematological parameters is common in patients treated with Gleevec. The side effect can be anemia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia (low platelet). Neutropenia and thrombocytopenia are more likely due to delays in the recovery of normal hematopoiesis that had been suppressed by the CML.
Treatment can be with erythropoietin that it can be beneficial for those who have severe anemia. For you MCV high we call macrocytosis / macrocytic anemia due to Gleevec you can take B12 injection protocol from your doctor together you may need to take folic acid as well to help with this kind of anemia.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Heang Chan Raksmey, General & Family Physician
