Does Intake Of Melatonin Help With Insomnia?

I take no medication of any kind but am having trouble sleeping and thinking about taking melatonin. If you do recommend this what dosage level would you recommend? I travel a lot and my sleep cycles get disrupted and I find it most difficult to get back on track either when travelling or when I return to home.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Melatonin may be effective in treating circadian rhythm disorders in which the desire for sleep is disrupted in its timing, resulting in difficulty falling asleep (insomnia) or inappropriate sleepiness.
For trouble falling asleep: 0.3 to 5 mg of melatonin daily for up to 9 months has been used.
For sleeping problems in people with sleep-wake cycle disturbances: 2-12 mg of melatonin taken at bedtime for up to 4 weeks has been used.
Better to visit your clinician and start the treatment course under his supervision.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH, General & Family Physician
