Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Intake Of Nicotin Cause Heart Palpitations Despite Having Hypertension?
My heart makes a real deep thud every once in a while. I can feel it in my neck, arms, armpits, etc. It s getting more frequent as of late. I believe I am suffering from hypertension also as my heart seems to beat faster and harder when this occurs. This deep thud is not your average palpitation. I am worried as I also got dizzy while at work. I work in the sun so I blew it off ss if I was just overheated but then I just got pretty dizzy again and my mother said I was pale . I am a 32 yr old male who is healthy except my nicotine habit. Should I be this concerned?
I can see you might be suffering from severe palpitations. Causes of deep thud like heartbeat are as follows: 1) Strenuous exercise 2) Lack of sleep 3) Stress and anxiety 4) Medicines 5) Alcohol, caffeine, nicotine and recreational drugs 6) Iron deficiency anemia 7) Hyperthyroidism 8) Arrhythmias
So, it might be due to nicotine in your case. My advice would be as follows: 1) Get an ECG done. 2) Get a 2D echocardiography done. 3) As you also have dizziness, you need thorough clinical examination and cardiac evaluation. Please do consult a cardiologist for further evaluation.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
