Does Isoflurane Exposure During Pregnancy Affect Fetus?

Hello, I am a veterinary technician constantly helping the veterinarian in surgery where isoflurane is constantly use as a general anesthetics, now i am pregnant, is it advisable for me to continue my surgery assistant in this kind of environment? I am in the first trimester about to get to the second of my pregnancy,I always give my employer excuses to be excluded in surgery, I got to the point I have no more excuses to give unless I have a medical proof. My fear is what effect is this isoflurine exposure going to have on my developing fetus?

Hello ma'am and welcome.

There was a very old study if I remember right that should an increased risk of miscarriages with exposure to isoflurane, but this was an animal trial and as far as I know there have been no reported human trials or cases with detrimental effects from exposure to isoflurane gas.

Of course I would recommend minimizing your exposure as much as possible, but I do not think there should be a problem. Inform your staff about your pregnancy, and try to step out during the gas exposure. But otherwise, I am sure your baby should be fine.
