Does Long Term Intake Of Omeprazole Have Any Side Effects?
I was told by my physician to decrease my omeprazole slowly, after having it used for many years. I have done this for a month with some success and now Dr wants that I start to see if Rantidine would be a good replacement. She said that the omeprazole has had some bad review. Should I go and fill the Rantidine? Thank you for your answer. Hanni Johnson. (I also take Advair for asthma, Aspirin, Fenofibrate, Fluoxetine, Furoemide and am 83 years old)
Dear Hanni Johnson, Hi & Welcome. I can understand your concern regarding the safety of Omeprazole on long term use.
The long term intake of proton pump inhibitors can cause the following side effects: Osteroporosis (thinning of the bones which can be vulnerable) & deficiency of vitamin B12.
Since the stomach acid can kill most of the germs like bacteria, so aspiration pneumonia, or certain intestinal infections (like Clostridium difficile) are likely to occur on prolonged use of Omeprazole.
In view of the above, you can start taking Ranitidine as suggested by your treating doctor.
Hope this answers your query.
Wishing you best of your health.
