Does Long Term Use Of HRT Medication Increases Cancer Risk?
Hi Mr. Rynne: I have been on HRT since 39, now I am 47, I have been taking Prometrium and estrace , recently my family doctor said that If I did not have hot flashes I don t have to take estrace anymore but becuz I could not sleep, my doctor told me to increase the dosage of prometrium for 200mg a day before bed to 300mg a day before bed, so my question to you is that do you see I am having great risk of having cancer since I have been on HRT for so long. thank you Jessie
The results of the studies on likelihood of cancer with Estrace replacement therapy with or without Prometrium are not in consensus. The likelihood of breast cancer, uterine cancer and ovary cancer have been linked to Estrace replacement therapy in some studies, but the likelihood is very small even in these studies. More over, you have been advised to stop Estrace now, which is very right, as Prometrium alone has not been linked to probability of cancer. Still, you are advised to talk about your new symptoms, if any with your doctor and treated accordingly, if needed.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Satnarain Bansal, General & Family Physician
